How do I select a DSL provider?

Here are some important questions to ask when looking for DSL service:

How will I be charged?

Tip: Try to find a provider who bills on a monthly basis with no long-term contract. Some DSL providers require a 1-2 year commitment.

What happens if I cancel my service?

Tip: By purchasing DSL on a month-to-month basis you can cancel service at any time. If you have a long-term contract and cancel before the end of the term, you'll likely be billed a hefty early termination fee.

How long has the provider been offering Internet access?

Tip: Internet service providers that have been around a long time will have the infrastructure and know-how to provide you with excellent service.

Do they offer free technical support?

Tip: Some providers charge for technical support. Free is always better.

Where is the customer support staff based?

Tip: Most U.S. customers prefer domestic-based call center staffing.

Can the provider supply me with a modem?

Tip: A DSL modem is required to use any DSL service. If you already own one, you can probably use it with your new provider. If not, ask if your provider has DSL modems for sale.
